longear or pumpkinseed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That would be a male Longear sunfish. It lacks the distinct red spot on the opercle flap to be a Pumpkinseed.

My wife now refers to these kinds of fishing trips as dork fishing, because she knows I'm not after anything big enough to bring home for dinner, just the fish tank.

Lol. My grandma thought I couldnt catch anything nearly as big as my rapala I showed her. As all she saw me ever catch were little tiny sunnies. Then I brought a big bass back and she was like holy crap I thought u caught those little fish. Other fisherman look at u weird when ur bringing a bucket of these little tiny sunfish home too lol like what is he gonna do with that

I went to the bait shop and asked the guy for his smallest hooks and he asked what I was after. I told him longears and he said, You gonna use them for catfish and I said nope gonna keep them. He gave me one of those high eyebrow oh you're one of those people nods.

Here's another one from this morning. Almost looks like it could be an orange spotted sunfish or a dollar sunfish. Any opinions?

There's a chance that this might be a pumpkinseed or even a longear x pumpkinseed hybrid.

There are some pumpkinseeds that do not have the distinct red spot.

Probably a female longear. Definitely not o-spot or dollar. A little bit pumpkinseedy, but not quite right. Are you getting these in southern Illinois? Very pretty fish. Must be fired up to breed right now. Probably will be very aggressive if put in a tank this time of year since they will be in full breeding mode. Get some little ones and grow them up.

I've only caught a few large pumpkinseeds and never even close to this small so I don't know too much about the juveniles but all of the pictures of pumpkinseeds that I've looked up have the orange spot and the orange color has been much more prominent in them than the blue.
