Longear Sunfish in 55 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i didnt have any luck. i had 2 in a 55 and they did good untill they got about 5inch. then they became aggressive with each other. so badly that they were pulling scales off each other. i ended up getting rid of one. But i have read about others keeping a few in a 55.
Good luck

A local aquariast has quite a few Lepomis megalotis that are 1½-2 1/2”
I have an empty 55gallon wide.

Would I be able to stock more than one long ear in it?
The Northern Longear would be perfect in a 55 gallon ( one male a couple females) a central mo Longear you could only keep one male and maybe 2 females in a 55g (its the most aggressive and has a cichlid looking hump on the spawning male). There are 3 to 6 subspecies of Longear ......the Northern is the smallest and most docile (much like the Orangespotted Sunfish). I would just be carefull to put in only one male.

They are 'Kansas longears'
Thats the same as our central Mo type, longear ......they are beautifull fish , but get to 6-8 inches and have the "hump" and the males get very territorial during breeding . I would try to have only one male and as Gazelle said some driftwood. yes you could have up to 3 or four Sunfish in your tank including the male.
