I was wondering if anyone had kept these before? I want to try and get a native tank or two going this summer and these are on the top of my list of desirable ones. Besides the hurdle of actually getting my hands on one (they are endemic in the region but that doesn't make it easy lol) how do I care for it? A species profile says they prefer water temperatures of 75 - 80? I thought it was a coldwater species though? Bit confused about it all, any help would be appreciated!

They'll live just fine at room temperature or up into tropical temperatures.

They'll pretty much eat anything, they're not picky. I fed mine floating cichlid pellets primarily.

Not hard to care for, one of the easiest species you could keep.

i have two right now and they are colorfull, i keep my native tank at room temp which is 72, i feed mine worms, crickets, and other live foods, but their main diet it floating pellets and flake food

Great fish to keep together and fun to watch when feeding, live food prefered and can be trained to take flake and pellets, room temp is fine and they like densely planted tanks. No trouble with these fish at all, easy to keep and rear and fun to fish for in the wild.

Are these guys territorial??

Yes. Though I don't know to what extent you're worried about.

They're not extremely aggressive but they will bicker and they can definately do damage to more peaceful fish.
