Longest kept Northern pike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the general consensus appears to be that they are not well suited for aquariums. If you noticed the lack of response pertaining to people actually keeping them. I think that in itself says not a good idea. Though they are not giving you the answer you want they are providing valuable information. Remember just be cause you can, doesn't mean you should.

Northern pike are actual monsters thats the problem. They get much bigger faster then gars and etc. Plus i would find one extremely boring, from what i've read all the do 80% of the day is swim in position waiting to ambush prey, that other 20% is spent swimming around (i've read they need alot of swim room) Personally i wouldnt bother getting one. plus they can live to be 20 years, unless your prepared to keep a fish that long i wouldn't remove it from the wild.

The fish has a lot of sentimental meaning to me so its not really about level of excitement . I don't think that its all telling that not many people replied btw deepbluesea I just don't think many people with a 500 gallon or more tank have wanted to devote it to a Northern Pike or two like I'm willing to do so it has nothing to do with "information you want". I would be willing to look at other options though. Like since my tank is in my basement as of now and I can guarantee good water quality, maybe try something like a rainbow trout or some sort of trout because I just got an internship at the local fish hatchery.... Any ideas on that or should I post another thread on it to garner attention?

Trout would be a MUCH better option. They are another species that not many people keep, so good information may be hard to come by.

no clue, I've never found monster fish from other countries that interesting, especially how most aquarists just keep them in bare bottom tanks with a collection of other huge monster fish.

I have nothing against a barebottom which I have myself w/ some drift wood and fake plants... But I would make it really nice fake natural looking stuff with a bare bottom if I was to do trout or pike or anything. I like to keep my tank really clean and gravel sort of prohibits that.
