Longest kept Northern pike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good luck getting any help in the future with that attitude. People like you don't need to be keeping any type of fish...

Thats a stupid thing to say all my fish are in great condition. I was just frustated because i was trying to get some Northern Pike information and all anyone would say anything on was the damn permit... freaking annoying. If I was trying to find out if I needed a permit for a fish I would have started a thread titled " Do I need a permit for this fish?"

Well truth be told we did give you information before mentioning permits. Mrcatfish posted a paragraph of information before another poster mentioned a permit.

No no I totally appreciate it thank you I don't want any helpful information to be over looked. It was just the 12 un-northern-pike related posts after that got to me... Hey you might wanna see if you need a permit... would have been fine.

Sorry if my last post annoyed you. I was trying to inform that not all states are the same and the US fish and life will not hunt you done for keeping gamefish if it is legal in your state. Yes, I did advise getting a permit if one is required because I would hate to see a fellow native fish keeper get in trouble for not following the laws. Native fish keeping doesn't need any more states banning the keeping of natives. California and Tennessee have a complete ban on natives.

Cool opinion. Has zero to do with conversation. Not helpful.

Sweet, here's helpful:

YOU KNOW SQUAT ABOUT FISH.

YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO PROPERLY CARE FOR FISH OF THIS SIZE.

YOU'RE COMBATIVE WHEN PEOPLE OFFER YOU SOUND ADVISE, WHICH CALCULATES TO YOU BEING ANOTHER IGNORANT KID. "WANT WANT WANT... OH CRAP, I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED." NOT TO MENTION, YOU BELIEVE 500GAL IS ENOUGH FOR A FREAKING NORTHERN PIKE.

You know why there are laws against keeping these fish? It's not because they're game fish: IT'S BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

Carry on. I hope your mom doesn't let you get ANY more fish.

Have kept them but not for prolonged periods only 3-6 months at a time. The require some pristine water, don't heat it just keep it clean and make sure the tank is very large for their size(atleast twice if not three times as deep as the fish is long and twice that for length, height is not so important 24-30 inches in height is fine for life) they are prone to darting and will beat themselves to death in a smaller tank. I've never gotten on on a prepared food so you will have to raise your own feeders. They like cover at the waters surface more than most other fish I put snails and Lillie pads in the tank to good effect. Good luck. If water parameters aren't good they are prone to fungus, also if you ever get a chance do treat for internal parasites via medicated food (again depends on if you get it on prepared food) They keep well with bullheads, about the only other natives that I've not had issue with most everything else that is their size or smaller gets killed. If you can get grass pike instead of northerns you will do better they stay dramatically smaller.

I know lots about fish, so your wrong. You have no idea what I can or cannot afford, therefor your ignorant. I was only combative when the conversation became very redundant and off topic, because I am eager for some 1st hand information them on keeping them not on native fish permits so yes I was persistent in getting back on track. When was the last time you saw a tank devoted to a northern pike that was in the range of 500 gallons? Never. Yes thats what i thought so how do you know its max aquarium size isnt compatible with a 500 gallon tank? Yes once again your ignorant because you've never tried. The laws in place have zero to do with people who like to keep native fish that grow large and want to have a proper environment for them. So once again your very mis-led. I will carry on with my fish keeping so thank you, and my mother is fully supportive of my hobby and doesnt have a say in what fish I buy because i buy them with my own money because I have a job. Next time stop by with some helpful advice instead of your usual comments that have no 1st hand backround and zero relevance to the conversation. Olympic sized swimming pool............

"The laws in place have zero to do with people who like to keep native fish that grow large and want to have a proper environment for them. "
WRONG

You have to understand that the laws put into place are to protect our native wildlife. If you want to remove a species from the wild to grow in an aquarium you HAVE to follow the laws, or serve jail time and get fined. Follow the rules or there is no place in you for native fish keeping, other wise its called poaching.

On a side note, you might want to use that 500 gallon you plan to build, for your fish in your other aquarium instead of a northern pike -->
