i was at petsmart the other day and i saw some longfin oscars and they look pretty cool. is there anything to know before i go get a couple? i am thinking about putting them in my 10 gallon for a month or so until they are about 5- 6 inches. i figure with the fins and all they would be the same body size as a 3 inch oscar. any info would be great.

dude.... the 10gallon?.... until they get to 6inches?

isnt that kinda .... small?

Not trying to offend you...

But I have one small 14g set up under my main tank which I hope to keep fry in.

I have 2 Albino Oscars that are about 5-6 inches... and believe me there is no way even one of them would really fit in there anymore.

he said 6", which would be about the same as a 3" regular oscar...so he's talking about 6" TL where half of that would most likely be the tail.

However, I still don't think a 10 gallon is suitable, even for juvies. Oscars put out a great deal of waste for their size. I'd do no less than a 29 gallon to grow them up to 3" SL but that's just me.

As to what I think about them...well to each their own but I'm not a fan of them myself. I'm not the biggest fan of oscars in general...even though I have 2. IDK, don't ask. :p Every once in a while I'll see one that catches my eye which is why I have the red oscar, and the albino that I have was a rescue. It was either I take him or he would go into a pond behind the previous owner's house..and mind you it was only about 40 degrees at the time so I opted to take the oscar myself.

:)

Yea....10 gallon is too small for oscar(s). I'd try getting a bigger tank and making your 10 gallon a quarantine tank :)

I love oscars but I've never been a fan of the long fin morph. They just look silly. Also, a ten gallon tank wouldn't last long as a grow out.

well just to quarantine them a 10 will do fine right? they are about six inches with 3 inches worth of tail. so they would be like a 3 inch regular. keep them in there for a week and then move them to the big tank.
