How fast does a longnose gar grow? Picked one up a few days ago. He's maybe 5" now. Just wondering how quickly I'll need to upgrade my aquarium. 48x13x21.

Oh, wow. Thanx. I was thinking since the aquarium is only 13" wide I would need to upgrade before he gets to 10".

He'll be good in there for a while yet - About 2 years, depending on your feeding.

2 years? what? i would upgrade now or within a month

if you feed it good ,probally only 6 months . they seem to gro fast for the first 18"

I say he can stay in that tank until he is 8". At about an inch a month that gives you 3 months at the most! Then you need to go to 18" or 24" wide.

1/4 to 1/3 of that...

my 3 lngs are almost outgrowing their 18" deep tank and they are 4 monthes in my care if that? they can grow 18"+in their first year if fed and cared for well.

if you havent yet read the stickies in the gar/bowfin subforum for all the info you'de ever want and more on gar includeing lngs in general.

a 75 or 90 should last a year - 2 realistically. once they hit that first year of growth they slow down considerablly.

footprint is more important then total gallons.
