Hi!

The local LFS has some long-nose gar, and its an interesting fish. My attempts to get more information on it have failed rather spectacularly, so I was wondering if you guys can help.

1. How big does it get? I've seen some pretty wide ranges online. How wide / large a tank does it need?
2. What does it eat? Will it eat small fish or is it more of a worm type?
3. What tank mates are good?

Specifically (once its big enough!) would it go with:
Endlicheri / Delhizi / random Venezuelan pike?
Black Ghost Knife and ZigZag eel?

Thank you!
C4.

Are you referring to some of the false characins like needle nose gars/mosaic gars etc? Those all stay under 12 inches and would probably do alright with those fish once full grown but the pikes makes that a 50/50 shot.

if you’re talking about a true longnose gar it’ll get a minimum of 3 feet closer to 4+. And it would kill everything you have, Atleast before the Endlicheri if it ever reached 30 inches. Fish stores mislabel gars all the time, probably one of the most mislabeled fish other than cichlids.

Hrm then I think I'll get a picture of it, thanks! I don't know enough about it to get any sort of ID.

Here's a pic of the two gars they have, one's an aligator gar20210120_154543.jpg. I think its 3?

Both the gars on the mid left and top right are alligators and the mid level fat one on the right does look like a longnose gar. He will get 3+ and likely eat all your fish, all of those gars will

So it depends if The Gar is Wild Caught or Tank raised. Wild Caught Gars will only eat Fish and frozen Bloodworms. Tank raised Gar will eat Raw, Shrimp, cooked Shrimp and imitation Crab. Longnose Gar will Grow 3’ and will eat any Fish under 7”.

Thank you all for your very informative replies! I won't get one of those gars then, for sure! If they get a different Gar, I may ask you guys again.

some Gars grow only up to 2’ but, everything else above still applies.
