Alright will do we will keep in touch

Definitely keep in touch. I'm very interested.

BTW...what are you currently feeding him? If you havent already, you may want to start offering some prepared foods to him.

ya i have tryed it just no success, what are some prepared foods i can try?

When I had my original one, he started off taking crickets off the top, and after a while, I'd start dropping pellets in with the crickets and he would mistake the pellets for crickets and eat them. I also have used a feeding stick to get him to take shrimp. Having him on this type of diet will be a lot better for the fish. Persistence pays off. IMO, the longnose is the second hardest gar to get off of prepared foods (next to the shortnose gar), but you have to stick with it.

Ya hes a tough little guy, the only thing is he is in a preditory tank so i might have to isolate him or something till i can get him off

and what do you mean by a feeding stick like the stuff from hikari?

If possible, you should isolate him. Longnose gar are one of the most easily injured of all the gar species and they dont do well with aggressive fish. I had a longnose gar, slightly larger than your kill itself in a 30 gallon tank all by itself, so they're very unpredictable.

By feeding stick, I use a very thin wooden dowel rod you can pick up at Lowes or most hobby shops. Stick a small piece of shrimp on one end of it and gently maneuver it in front of the gars snout. If successful, the gar will strike it as if it's live prey. He may drop it a few times, but keep trying. This method isnt always successful with longnose gar due to their more skittish nature. If you need any further assistance, let me know. I'd be glad to help. Good luck,

alright ya ill go pick one of those up and i have a 10g for very temporary then i have a 29g that can be opened up, how much for one of those feeding sticks? and if i got him on shrimp, would that be his diet, or what else could i try and mix in there?

i remember i got my longnose to take shrimp once and he wouldnt touch it again. when i try to get my gars to take prepared foods (i quarentine feeders to prevent from disease for them) i use a clothes hanger. just untwist it and put the shrimp on the end as jordan has explained. i would say pellets as another food option but like said before it is difficult to get them to take it. my gars dont even acknowledge pellets when i offer them. but anyway good luck with him.

I use shrimp as my staple fish diet, but mix pellets in during every feeding. In my experience traing a gar to take pellets is easier when you have other gar already taking them...sort of a learned resonse. I prefer a thin 1/8" wooden dowell rod as a feeding stick...i'm not too keen on the idea of sticking metal next to my fish's eyes. If the feeding stick doesnt work, then you will have to try other methods although i have had every gar i own take shrimp off of a stick. let me know if this doesnt work and we'll go from there.

BTW...you can pick up a dowell rod for a few dollars (pretty cheap).

good luck,

o ya i got ya ill try a little dowell rod like that and try it and by shrimp you mean market shrimp, right? and how do i prepare it?
