Loofah as course filter?

Had I left it I doubt I'd have noticed a difference for a few weeks more at least, but I gave it a poke and yes, it wasn't yet goop but it was... insecure. It was time.
It's in a bucket in the office- remind me tomorrow.
It didn't lose shape & looked normal but that the guppies were picking at it and it was somewhat darker. I gave it a squeeze and it wasn't as hard nor as springy as only a couple of days previous, so I chose to remove it. Once out of water there was a smell telling me that I'd made the right choice. The smell was weird, sort of sweet but nothing I can describe nor compare to. Nothing I expected.
