Im originally from Philly too, always thought it was weird when I met people that called it Pop (they were mostly from the midwest). Pop is a verb....lol!
Oh yeah,which area?...it's like when I would visit some other places and people called sneakers tennis shoes but nobody ever called them basketball shoes lol.

Ironically enough, the term "pop" was originally used on Mehls / Pop & Mineral Waters/ Erie Pa (that's right, Philly) bottles as early as the 1860's. Over the years soda pop was simply abbreviated by some to soda, and others to pop. The overly anal still refer to it as soda pop. :)
 
I just read on wikipedia that "soda" was first used in 1802, and the name came from the carbonates of sodium used to provide carbonation. "Pop" is an onomatopoeia (from opening a carbonated drink) that first showed up in 1812.

Erie,while in the same state is quite a distance from Philly...sorry for the derail but I couldn't resist.
 
LOL, sorry, I should have said PA. Obviously Philly has their own separate language. ;)
