I'll just share my thoughts here for a moment.

Guys, whether you like it or not, nobody is obligated to use the search function. To be honest, I would not have made it obligatory either. While in my opinion, I appreciate that you pointed out the search function to maximize its utility, I do not think there is anything wrong with people posting seemingly repetitive questions that you felt it necessary to post the search function because you were aggravated by questions whether they were repetitive or not, whether they seem silly or not.

Secondly, you have to realize that the forum is here for everyone to be able to properly research the basics they need to learn before they keep their fish responsibly. If we continuously tell them to do a search, what else would this forum's purpose be? The forum will eventually stop its traffic flow because nobody else is asking questions anymore whether the questions are simple or complicated. Each new question brings more new questions and answers. That's one of the many advantages why this forum existed.

You have a lot to be thankful for with the modern technology. And do remember that you were once where they are. You yourself were new to the forum. You asked questions and some of us volunteered to answer for you. A kind gesture of repayment is helping the new members instead of shoving the search function under their noses by telling to use it. A good question to ask yourself is, "Were you told bluntly to use the search button yourself?"

Excellent answer Lupin.I see this come up every few months.Newer member decides he has to answer every question then gets tired of answering the same question.I think its commendable to want to help but if you find yourself getting tired of the same question over and over....Go watch your fish, and let someone else answer. No shortage of knowlegable fishkeepers here.Dont burn youself out.MFK will still be here.

More like couple of times a month:) Especially in the Ray forum.

i never care how many times i see the same question.. just think way back when we did that too.. good thing everyone answered us in a nice friendly way... or we would not be here enjoying MFK.. so now that you know so much.. it is time to pass that info on.. and on and on............

I usually just tell them it's been discussed before, followed by an in depth link with all the info, so they get it right away instead of waiting and bumping it every 30 minutes..

I agree that if someone wants to answer the question, they should answer it. However, some individuals want to be "spoon-fed" every aspect of the process, and so they are not actually learning anything. Learning the process of research is a priceless lesson, as is the patience it requires. In addition, if someone asks, "What do I need to know to keep (insert fish here)?" then it would take a long time for different members to give them this information, or a long time for one member to do so. If they are directed to a page with all of that information already, it saves the original poster time, because they have all of that info at their fingertips. Then, they can come back and ask specific questions to build onto their knowledge base. I would never decide to build motorcycles, join a forum, and expect to have the process explained to me step-by-step as I stand by, wrench in hand, waiting to be told what to do.

This is a good point.

It just gets frustrating sometimes when people post such a basic question, and the answer is right under their nose, if they would just read a little. However, sometimes I read through the old threads I created, and I think to myself, "I asked that stupid question?" But, there are no stupid questions when you are beginning the hobby (well, maybe some stupid questions).

I do think this is a good thread though. There's nothing wrong with pointing out to the forum that a little research using a simple search will go a long way.

This thread contains WIN. I daresay, the search tool is most helpful.
