Amongst the Catfish & Plecos
Well, apparently you can now buy Pangasius hypophthalmus at Petco for $4.99 per baby pet fish or $4.99 per lb. of dinner.

I took this at Trader Joes. On the back it specifies the species as Pangasius hypophthalmus. I knew it was eaten very commonly in Asia, but its the first time I've seen it sold as food here. Wonder if this will slow people down on eagerly buying that baby pet fish for their 10 gallon tank if they come to the realization that it eventually gets big enough to fillet for dinner.....

I prefer mine swimming. I don't think I could look at my fishy swimming around, and explain that the smell of my dinner was a close relative.

i saw thoose at a trader joes while i was in cali with my grandma, and was like no way. she wanted to buy them!!! i was like i wont eat it but go ahead, so she didnt buy it. glad to know someone else saw them so i dont sound crazy

I had to document this as my friends and family already think I'm nuts, and thought this would give them a little more fun ammo.:grinno: I called my husband to ask if he wanted to try it (somewhat jokingly). He was a flat and instant, "No... I don't eat things related to my pets. No."

hahaha i take it you keep mekong cats or id sharks? i jsut think it is cruel to eat such a majestic fish

I have an ID. I'm currently treating him with $30 worth of antibiotics from an attack by a good sized TSN. She highly recommends the Pangasius as a delightful tasting fish, as this is now the second one she's attacked. Both were WAY too big for her to eat, but she managed to kill one the first time and comepletely deglove the back half of another the second time. Apparently, they are tasty stuff.

hahahaha sorry to hear that but it is kinda funny, she could be a spokesfish for that catfish fillets

Knocking on every piece of wood I can find, but there are smaller fish in the tank that she has left alone.:screwy: Okay, I'm sure I just screwed all those fish by putting that in writing....

I prefer mine swimming, in a pan of hot oil. kidding!!

I read somewhere that fish farms in the united states are starting to grow these, and I suppose there's the proof

This actually stated that it was farm raised in Vietnam.
