From what I have seen, most people who have problems with them claim they just waste away over time and die in a month or two. I have only kept one and it was like 15 years ago when I was a fish keeping idiot, so I can't give any first had experience on these ones in particular, but I have seen it happen to others.

Now I 100% quarantine all plecos by themselves for at least a month just so I can completely monitor their food intake.

Gotta day that’s a nice pleco and very impressed that your wife is very helpful in your hobby. I had a gold nugget yrs ago and like others say didn’t live to long. Ate fine and one day came home to a dead one.
