Yeah, they can definitely get larger than 12". I had one a few years ago that got to about 14-15". The largest I've heard of in captivity was around 18".

I've never seen one over 12. Growth rate slows down a ton around the 10 inch mark IME.

Mine did better in a group of three. Usually hung out together. Had one that was crazy active, one that hid all the time, and one that was in the middle.

My three never ate pellets. Blood worms, shrimp, earth worms they did eat. They would look at "prepared" food and ignore it.

The first one I had didn't eat for 3 months. Still not sure how it lived through that.

They are cool fish, especially if you get an active one that isn't shy all the time.
