You'd still need to change the tank in the same amount of time anyways as jars arent flexible at all and cant make steep turns while silvers can.
 
Get the tank first then get the fish, trust me on this one... Buy the largest tank you can possibly justify.

wow that IS pretty small. I think they still have their egg sac at that size, but, yea thats pretty much the right growth rate.
 
yeah it had its egg sac. started him on baby crickets, saw a TON of growth quick for the first few months to about 6", and has slowed down since. He eats everything from baby honduran red points to flake and tetracolor pellets. never been picky about food, except for bio-gold. HATES bio-gold.
