Vieja are awesome fish. Duane and Dan covered most of the info you asked for, I just wanted to add that they can make great wetpets. My old Guttalatum was maybe the most personable fish I ever kept, more so than any Amph I have had actually.
This was him at around 8-9"

Edit- can you guys see the pic? It's showing in the edit window but not when I post for me? I think photobucket wants me to give them money...

Most Vieja can become very personable.
That said, I have found when kept alone (with no other cichlids or fish) is when they most relate on that kind of level.
Whenever you keep them in groups, pairs, or trios, this anthropomorphic behaviour often doesn't occur, because they fall into instinctual roles.
I normally don't try to become friendly with my fish, so this does not really relate to me but.....
It was growing out a group of about 6 Vieja zonata to end up with a pair, only 1 survived the rut (other than the pair), so I put it alone in a tank at work (no other fish).
I was coddled by other workers, they named it, and it took on very anthropomorphic characteristics, whereas my pair always remained aloof and "wild like".
Domestically bred species over many years and generations like Oscars, seem to have lost that instinctual fear, and maintain a sort of Stockholm Syndrome attitude, but Vieja and many other cichlids have not really been kept that long, so many may retain that healthy suspicion of humans.

Vieja are one of my favorites! I've kept synspilum, bifas, argentea and maculicauda. The synspillum/bifas and maculicauda were very personable. My first bifas I had was a real glass banger and would rush the glass when you put your face up to the tank. Currently my black belt is by himself in a 150. He recently killed off his synspillum mate of 5 years.
