Looking for a meanie

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think that I want a red devil. I'm really interested in the parachromis species. A lot of the Veija species look cool as well, but I know that some of them get really big.

In my opinion you won't be able to get away with anything else in that tank that is more agressive than the cobra pike or they will almost certainly fight. The pike is going to get huge. Mine went from 4" to 12" and thick in a little less than a year and was a real bully to all my fish who are more on the semi agressive side. Dats/Tig/ etc. When I moved her to a 125 with another pike already in there they immediately fought and I had to remove her. A cobra pike isn't going to take any crap from any of the fish you are thinking about getting.. Midas/Red Devil/Black nasty etc. I have owned all these fish and unless you have them in a much bigger tank or have a bunch more fish to spread the agression (which you can't because the tank isn't big enough) the majority of the time it is not going to work

Well, I know aggression can come with age, but for the most part, my cobra has been pretty mellow. Right now it is about 6 inches. It pretty much leaves my other fish alone. I have kept it with severums, Jack Dempseys, and Loisellei's with no aggression at all. However, when it does decide that it doesn't like a fish for whatever reason, it completely tears that fish apart. This has only happened twice, both with catfish. I feel that my pike would be able to get along with at least one other cichlid.

By the way. I feel that the title of my post stupid on my behalf. I don't want a cichlid just because it is mean. I'm looking for something a little on the rare side with a unique look that would go well in my tank. As for my cobra pike, It is one of my favorite fish and if you guys don't think it will work with any other cichlids, I am willing to devote my 120 to suite its needs. That may mean just purchasing some more armored catfish instead.

Wow. The Zonatum looks really cool. I know that it not a Vieja, but I was also looking into the Bocouti, any idea if it would work?

OOh, you like vieja species? Get yourself a Bifasciatum or a zonatum. They will get big (12-14") but are very beautiful, and very tough.

oh yeah, definetly zonatum, they have some of the most amazing colors:grinyes:

Yes, Zonatum seem really cool, so I'm going to look into them. Would they get along with a cobra pike? Does anyone have any experience with them?

I have kept Guttulatum, which is basically the same species except a bit less agressive. they are VERY fast growers, and have a LOT of attitude! They will also eat anything that looks like food, but the best things to feed them for color is a good pellet, and 2-3x per week thaw some frozen bloodworms or krill. Mine shot from 3" to 9" in 6 months, so if you buy one just large enough for the piketo not eat or kill it, it should shoot up to a good enough size to defend itself. I think rapps has both of these species around 4" right now. Check it out!

EDIT: oh, and I wouldnt try the bocourti, they are far from agressive.
