So I am in college and soon will be moving into an apartment and I am looking for a good pet to live with me. I cannot decide what the hell I want to get though. I will probably be building the cage for whatever I get so keep that in mind. Also I do have limited space to some extent. I was thinking about getting a tegu so that would be like MAX size for an enclosure and that would be a squeeze. But I am not really set on herps so any ideas will be appreciated. I have a while to do my homework and what not so throw some ideas at me please. Remember though I am in college.....

Can you give us some more ideas on what you're looking for in a pet? Do you want something good for handling? For viewing? What kind of attention needs are ideal for you? Do you want something low maintenence, or do you not mind something high maintenence? Do you want to deal with heat, uvb, live food? Are noise and mess issues for you? etc.

Honestly I have no idea really. I deff want something that is somewhat handleable. But I really don't have many limitations on the amount of time I can put into it and what not.... Handling is about the only thing that I have in mind at this point. Oh and I cannot stand smelly animals.... no ferrets lol

A ball python would be a good choice. Docile, easy to handle, don't need a huge enclosure. They can be picky eaters but are otherwise practically perfect snakes.

Rats are also a good choice. If you get young ones they will tame readily and be easy to handle. They have little odor, but much less than mice or ferrets, especially if you use one of the odor-absorbing litters and keep up with maintenance. They are also quite intelligent and interactive. They only live a few years, which can be good if you're not ready to make a long-term commitment. They like complicated cages with lots of platforms and ramps and such, so you can go nuts with the cage design.

Ok I probably should have mentioned I have a bit of experience with keeping herps too. I have had balls and corns and all sorts of geckos and stuff before. I kinda do want something a little different I have actually been considering a rat but I think I may want something a little bigger. Idk I think I am kinda just looking for something a little different.

have thought about a tortoise but I was worried that if I were to let it roam at all it would get hurt on the stairs... and I would never get a small tortoise again I want a big boy :)

Most big torts absolutley need outdoor space to trive so I dont think it would be such a good idea, plus most are great poopers. But a GREAT rep pet you could have is a blue tongue skink, really nice, omnivorus and long lived pet;)

I second the rat idea...but I'm biased, I have two :D.

What about a beardie? Can't go wrong with one of those if you want something handleable. You'd just want to make sure to get it from a good place, preferably a breeder or something.
