I just got a 40 gallon tank, its going to be heavily planted once the nitrite/nitrate cycle gets out of its dangerous faze, and I was wondering what are some really beautiful and colorful fish that would be great to put in? Thanks
Rainbows are incredibly colorful check this site out http://members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/Melano.htm
They take a while to grow and i have to warn you if you get them only get them from a private breeder as the ones from fish farms in petstores seem to be riddled with mycobacterium infections. Mine didn't show symptoms till a year later, the one in my avatar is my only rainbow i currently keep, a boesemani. http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_boese.php
discus would be a bit too big for a 40g, rams on the other hand would be great. for rainbows my vote goes for madagascar rainbows, i don't like the ugly(imo) body shape of the all the other adult rainbows i've seen. danios would be great, D. choprai is one i've been wanting to get ahold of since i traded mine for some killifish last year, very colourful.
