Looking for bright colorful FW fish

Killifish is perfect. Rainbowfish are perfect (bosemani like arachnar's avatar), Discus wouldn't be too big for a 40 gallon? Jack Wattley breeds them in 10 gallons. I am sure they would be fine in a 40 gallon planted, in fact, they woudl be in heaven. Those are your best bet for the most color, cichlids, discus to be exact.

German blue rams are also very colorful.

I vote german rams or discus.

you're right, jack does breed them in 20g and has bred them in smaller tanks but he doesn't keep them in those tanks permantly, they can get up 8" long.

I just got a 40 gallon tank, its going to be heavily planted once the nitrite/nitrate cycle gets out of its dangerous faze, and I was wondering what are some really beautiful and colorful fish that would be great to put in? Thanks

You can put the plants in straight up. Plants consume ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The nitrogen cycle doesnt exactly harm them.

discus would be a bit too big for a 40g, rams on the other hand would be great. for rainbows my vote goes for madagascar rainbows, i don't like the ugly(imo) body shape of the all the other adult rainbows i've seen. danios would be great, D. choprai is one i've been wanting to get ahold of since i traded mine for some killifish last year, very colourful.

Discus are in no way too big for a 40 gallon.

Adult discus would be OK in a planted tank, but planted tanks, and discus don't match. They are needing different things, that conflict with each other.

I have never seen a discus that long. They often become 8" tall, but not long.
