looking for cichlids that grow really big and are aggressive

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have a 55 and a 100 gallon. currently i have a short body flowerhorn, gold JD. the 55 gallon is empty i have both the flowerhorn and the jd in the 100 between a divider. im thinking of putting the jd or the fh in the 55 and having a space for whatever fish in the 100 gallon cause it has so much space. what yall think?? btw the flowerhorn is a short body so it is already at its max at 7-8 inches and the jd only hits max at 10 inches, so thats what im thinking

and yes i understand its a bit much for a red devil or tiger oscar i was gonna move em over to the 100 once they get that big anyways. the 100 is 17.5 inches wide it can easily support a 15 inch oscar at the least lol.

if yall can recommend me any large aggressive cichlids for my current tank setups please do im just looking for a nice, large, fat cichlid to put in as kind of a centerpeace. lol

I think you need to do more research and I think you need to rethink your approach.

ONE gorgeous centerpiece flowerhorn would be nice in the 100 gallon tank. (Minimum.)

The 55 is really too narrow to be adequate for any "big" Cichlids or other fish. Your Jack Dempsey is borderline for that tank - A few Firemouths or something would be a much better route.

You dont have the tanks for what you want to do. What happens to the flowerhorn once the oscar is too big for the 55 ?

Just leave your tanks as is and enjoy what you have put your jd in the 55 with some dithers maybe a small pleco

well what i was thinking is putting the jd in the 55 since it isnt that big at 8 inches its actually pretty small. the 55 gallon has 12.75 inches of turn space it should be fine by itself in there. then the 100 gallon i have a short body flowerhorn that hasnt grown for the past few years its stuck at 7 inches. short bodies max out at 8. so now i have an entire other half of a 100 gallon with no fish in there so i was thinking why not get an oscar or something. cause a 100 gallon has 17.5 inches of turn spice and its 48 inches long theres plenty of room. the turn space is what matters right? an oscar or red devil would max out at like maybe 12-13 right? if not yall could recommend me a fish that maybe only gets 8-10 inches and ill grab one of those. cause on the 100 gallon i have 275 gallons of filtration. it just looks really lonley with one tiny flowerhorn taking up so little room. i have a smal divider in there and then the other half has enough room for a decently large fish to turn and have plenty of swim space. what do yall think? it just looks really weird and lonely on one side lol.. unless i can somehow get a tankmate that can cooperate with the flowerhorn without fighting lol.

If all you have is a 55g, nothing you really want can fit. Why not medium size aggressive like convicts or firemouths?

Spend an entire day in your broom closet and let us know how that feels. Now, imagine how a full grown Oscar would (maybe?) feel spending its entire life in the same proportionally sized space.

Yup. I had an Oscar in a 72g bowfront and felt it was way too small. 4' is not enough room for a 13'' fish. The bioload is tuff to keep up with no matter how much filtration you have. Big fish need big tanks. its that simple. I want a dovii but my biggest tank is a 150g, but that is too small. So I don't have a dovii.
