Be well aware, these fish are difficult to get on dead foods & must be gotten off a diet of live fish, ASAP.

i have a tank i can breed feeders in would live food still be problematic or will it be okay as long as i can keep them breeding

As long as they are not GF. I'd gut-load those fish with good foods, before feeding to the puffer. Also, you still need to vary it's diet with things like worms & would be good to get it eating things like mussels, etc.

alright thank you very much i cant wait to get my hands on the newest member of the family ha how hard is it to get the diffrent color variants

Took me 4 years to find a nice, bright red one I could afford:

your was actually the one i saw that made me decide i wanted a congo puffer ha that picture is all over the internet i was goign to talk to a few of the shops around me and talk to a few of the dealers on here about finding one and how much it would be to get it

PP- I was lucky- Hoover, my orange Congo, ate market shrimp right from the start. I think the key is to get your LSF to not feed live fish if possible before you pick up your fish. Place I got mine avoids using live food (other than copepods, ghost shrimp, and worms for some fish). Don't even sell feeder goldfish. If you do want to feed live fish, mollies are good breeders and very health if you keep them in brackish water. I feed a few 1/4- 1/2 in. baby mollies about once a week. Gives Hoover something to do- he loves chasing them. Eventually he give up, buries himself and waits for them to swim by. One of the reason Congo puffers and other fish from the Congo are harder to find is the current prices. One of my friend owns a LFS and told me he can't bring in $75 wholesale fish that may not sell. I did ask his partner today if any Congos coming in but there were none on any of their distributors' lists. When Congos are available I am going to see if they will get some and do mail orders for them.

Your best bet is to politely bug your private LFS's into ordering you one. like said above high ticket fish are rarely brought in nowadays w/out a buyer already available. Most will also require a deposit or full payment before you even see the fish. Some won't.. by getting ot know your private LFS owners/managers ect the likely hood of them asking for money upfront drops.

We have a short list at work of fish customers want, that we look on our distributers lists for... if they pop up.. we call the customer. inform them it's available and how much it will cost them. then go from there. regulars that are well known are rarely asked for money.. but random joes are.

It took me almost 4 monthes of harassing the local fish shops around here to get an aba aba knife for my husband. But it paid off in the end. politely persistant...
