So I have a 55 gallon with nics growing out and I have been kicking myself trying to find good dither AND target fish. I am looking for a pair that will eventually go in a 6ft 125 gallon tank. I want something that will not get eatin/cought by the nics and something that isn't shy so the nics won't be shy. I have large sailfin mollys in there that are doing fine but I am not sure because they are only 3" and I am pretty sure they won't do well with a pair of spawning nics. I introduced 2" buenos aires tetras... over night half of the 10 were gone. i need something that gets a little larger or is a little higher bodied. Now these guys aren't THAT aggressive. They have an attitude like a jack dempsey or firemouth. I don't want zebra danios and I don't want silver dollars because they are large and can be skittish. I don't want something MASSIVE that will increase my bioload by too much. I will have a spawning pair of nics so my bioload will be high enough. My largest nic is 4.5". I have looked at...

clown barb
filament barb
ameca splendens*
congo tetras
some smaller growing cichlid?*

The ones with * I like because I want to stick to a CA theme but I am flexible on that. So any suggestions? What has worked for you guys?

ugh I am really not too fond of giant danios but i guess if anything I can give them a try since everyone seems to use them and they worked so well. But are there any OTHER suggestions?

As much as I hate to say it, giant danios are working EXTREMELY well in my tank at the moment, they are even starting to grow on me a little, as in I actually accept them in the tank and don't want to see them all dead haha.

Silver Dollars are hands down the best dither fish IMO! They are attractive, tough, and never skittish at feeding time either! Plus they will grow and are probably the fastest fish in most aquariums!

I have Giant Danios and Filament Barbs in my tank as dithers and they are both great. I personally like Filament Barbs as they are not huge but are big enough not to be lunch, are always moving, mate all the time so they are daily in their spawning dress (and the eggs make nice free food for everyone else lol), and are fun to watch.
