Yes they are that aggressive, Mine killed my Oscar and always chases my fish around all day long, And If I have a fish that does not run and just sits there and gets bitten he will get killed eventually.
My red wolf is really cool, hes with 2 bichirs, and a african knife fish. There are a bunch of rock formations with caves, and he claimed one as his own. So far he has minded him self and just chases other mates out of the cave. As for a gar, as long as there is not a large size difference or you get a killer wolf, it should be fine.

that sounds awesome! ill proly get the gar first cuz i alread ordered one and its gona be the biggest fish in my tank most likely so it should be fine haha im not gona make the same mistake as my friend did he had a realy nice gar along with a rtc and the red tail gobbled the gar up
do the wolffish or the exodons. you could do a tat or scomb payara. they are just not as aggresive as the armatus. i would not go with any gar that is just too small of a tank. the wolf is probably your best bet
black pirhana would work good, have to be a single fish though. Only problem with the gar is that they will need a wider tank, they're not that flexible and have a habit of breaking their back in too narrow of a tank, aim for 24" width for florida/spotted gars
