I'm looking to load up on some good cichlid books, preferably focusing on central american and south american cichlids. Encyclopedia style 'cichlids of the world' books would be great too. My favorites are the '80's style hand drawn pictures' type books. So if you know of books in that style that are good reads please share.

While the names have changed, the info in Ad Konnings book Cichlids of Central America, is a great read.
I also find Weidners South American Earth Eaters, and Paul Loiselles The Cichlid Aquarium invaluable.

Loiselle's Cichlid Aquarium is excellent.

Koning's Central American cichlid book is also quite good, although the evolutionary theory parts have since been disputed.

While the names have changed, what's more important is the basic husbandry info in each - really top notch.

I agree with Duanes, Cichlids from Central America, by Ad Konings is a good book. Also: Central American Cichlids, by David Sands, and The Interpet Manual Of Tank Busters, by Gina Sanford & Richard Crow.

There have already been some good ones mentioned but, a book i found good for identifying
fish id dr. Axelrods fish atlas. Its almost 1000 pages and has most species of fish. But it only gives basic info on them.

I also forgot to mention one of my favorites, American Cichlids II, Large Cichlids, by Wolfgang Staeck & Horst Linke.
There are wonderful, in nature photos, analysis of natural chemical water parameters, collection area maps, and often names of other species found in nature with the cichlid featured.
Published in 1985.

Good idea Ruck heres my stack this should give you some ideas.
