Looking for good cichlid books, any recommendations?

If you have certain species in mind, and have enough patience to browse, there are back issues of the Buntbarsche bulletin available from the American Cichlid Assn and back issues from Cichlid News magazine.

Funny how a lot of us here have all the same books.

I also think George Barlow's book "The Cichlid Fishes" is a fabulous book on behavior, breeding, and other aspects many other books have missed. It almost allows you to get into the cichlid psyche.

Great question , and a really good thread so far.

I too think that Dr Loiselles, The Cichlid Aquarium( my all time fav, I even had him sign it at ACA this year LOL!) , and Ad Konings Cichlids from Central America are excellant books . I am gonig to have to locate a copy of Sands book now

Thanks to the OP for asking this question

It is good to see some of the books that have been shown, but the idea is what book would you reccomend as being a good book to read/images... I know I of some of the books that you have purchased, after reading it, you have ask yourself, why did I buy this book...

Dr. Loiselle's also signed mine (although a few years ago) :)

Another great source is joining the ACA: you get electronic access to BB's all the way back to the beginning (1960s). Some really cool articles that are still relevant today... And I think it's $15 for an electronic subscription.

I picked up a bunch of old BBs at the convention in Indy. Enough bathroom reading for awhile ;)

These are the books I have dealing specifically with SA/CA cichlids (except Freshwater Fishes of México, which I included because it is great if you are into Mexican cichlids). They are all interesting, but the books by Weidner, Konings, Miller, Conkel, Linke/Staeck, and Leibel (in no particular order) are probably best.

I also forgot to mention one of my favorites, American Cichlids II, Large Cichlids, by Wolfgang Staeck & Horst Linke.
There are wonderful, in nature photos, analysis of natural chemical water parameters, collection area maps, and often names of other species found in nature with the cichlid featured.
Published in 1985.

Definitely one of my favorites as well.
I really don't read or keep as many books as I used to. There's just soo much available online.
When I was keeping Malawi& Victorians I had a 5ft tall stack of books though.

I agree there is so much available online. In addition to this I always hit up libraries to get basically anything you want within reason and it is free.

Here are a couple of decent books. The top book is simply a basic Tropical Fish book with some Cichlid info in it. The bottom book, "Guide to Cichlid" by David E. Boruchowitz is a really good guide to both African and "New World Cichlids". There are some excellent choices to pick from in this thread for sure. Good luck with your book/books.
