Looking for good filtration that won't break the bank.

^You're trying to make the argument that every filter leaks and is prone to failure, except for the Penquin brand. A simple google search will prove that argument wrong. In fact, with 4 separate filters running, you are 4 times as likely to have some sort of failure, especially with extra moving parts like the biowheel.

The AC110 rates among the best - if not THE best - in every single forum I've ever seen on the topic of the best HOBs.

That said, I once saw a very lightly stocked 60G running two Penguin 350s and it looked like the water was drinkable:).

Really it just comes down to what your budget is and what works best for your setup. I am excited to start into the canister filter side of the argument. It sued prove to be a very educational experience.

Budget filters have to mean diy sponge setup best bio filtration per $ spent, but you will have to vac with every water change. As you would with any other filter....

I have a pre-filter on my AC70 and one ready for the AC110. :) Agreed on the bio filtration. I personally think its the most important kind of filtration followed closely by mechanical.

Yeah, I definitely over think things. LOL

Thanks for the advice. It does make more sense to trust my fish to a good brand that has a reputation for making a good product. :)

The xp3 is much bigger and more powerful than the sun sun so they are the same price for there size or maybe the xp3 is like 5-8% more but not much. Ther xp3 is 115$s and the sun sun is 50 dollars, sun sun-75 gallons xp3-175 gallons... you would need at least 2 sun suns to match the xp3 in preformance...

good advice by oscaroo.the xp3 is awesome for the price.I recently got one and it seems to have a better flow rate than the fluval 406 to me.the xp3 gives the water more disturbence.maybe its how the outtake is made but I like the xp3 more and it was cheaper by at least $30

I operate all my Penquins without the biowheels, just use them as mechanical filters. Biowheel slows down the flow and makes splashing noice, so it's more a hassle than help. I have used over a dozen Penquins for over 20 years, and not a single one dies or leaks water. There are many things that can go wrong with wet and dry or canister fitler deisngs because they are more complicated. The Penquin design is so simple that there is hardly anyting to go wrong except the biowheel which I don't use. The only negative I have running 4 Penquins in a 125 gal with messy CAs is that I need to change filter pads in all 4 as frequently as twice a week.

I wouldn't agree that AC110 is the best. It may be the best in term of flow rate, but there are couple design flaws that make AC vulnerable to leak. First, the unique up lifting flow can pop up a clogged up sponge to leak on the top. Second, after repeated detachment of the motor to clean the impeller will lead to failed O ring and leak.
