Here is something I didnt check.

Does the Ranco display the actual temp as well as the settings?

Thank you to all for the input.

I will be getting the ranco controller I posted. The ETC-111000-000 ranco controller. Its the same thing exactly as the ETC-1r. Its just not wired for power cables. Its a wire it yourself. Comes with probe. For a bit less money directly from ETS.

That's the Ranco I have. I just wired a 6- outlet power strip to it. I run 4- 300 watt heaters. Btw it's been running for over 2 years. I never put the heat shrink on the probe. I don't know if its necessary.

According to some reports, it is. I have never done it either, but have heard a few complaints of failure do to this. I figure it wouldn't hurt.

Of course, heat shrink alone will not seal it. I would squirt a bit of silicone under teh heat shrink prior to shrinking it. This should give you the seal you are after.

Ive got the heat shrink and some silicone to do so. But really if you were to leave a excess at the end of the probe and then actually use a soldering iron with a hot knife attachment it will melt the end completely shut and it shouldn't have any issues.

May have to get these for all my tanks for the peace of mind alone.

How do most of you set yours up? Do you set the heater higher (if using one with its own temp setting) and the Ranco at normal temp? I looked at the Jehmco website and they say to turn the heaters in full on position. Kinda scary sounding.

I didn't have the heat shrink on the probe (bought from Jehmco that way) and it failed in a couple months. Fortunately it was just within the warranty period and they replaced it. Replacement is running fine now for a year and a half...

I ran my Ranco at the temp I wanted (78-80) and had the heaters set at about 4 degrees hotter. Although, I soon shifted to titanium heaters and tehy do not have a temp adjustment.

One more thing to add. The controller is more than capable of handling 1,500W. I recommend spending the $7 to add the second outlet. This limits the current being drawn through a single outlet.
