I have 150g fresh water tank. I checked the water levels today and everything was good with the exception of the nitrites and nitrates were high. Any advice on getting them in check?

How long has the tank been running and do you have fish in it?

Nitrites should always be zero in a properly cycled tank. Same with ammonia. Nitrates will increase due to fish waste and uneaten food etc. Plants will absorb some of the nitrate, but the only real way to get rid of it is regular water changes.

I've had the tank for a long time. I have never been able to get them in check. I have 2 Oscars, 1 Pleco, and a Fire Mouth. I change the water every two weeks. I know I should probably do them once a week. I'll give that a try and see where I stand after a month.

kind of general; gallon of wet/dry, type of media used in filter.

Also try the DIY filtration sub forum; may give you some ideas about improving your filter.

Blue Bio balls, blue filter pads. I really have no clue what the gallons are. I'll take a look. I was thinking of using the protein skimmer i have to see if that will help some. Thanks guys.

What test do you use? and what are the exact numbers? I agree though takeing a look at the sumps in the DYI are may help you pin-point any potential errors. and what amount of water are you changeing when you change it? some times it's the little dumb things that cause the problems and can be quick easy fixes. any and all info you can offer is always helpful. If the tanks been set-up for a long time. The nitrites should be reading 0 w/out issues.. possibley a chemical issue in your tank or a bacteria problem due to improper filter maintence. Those would be my 2 best guesses. so a break-down of how you and what you do when you clean the tank is liekly key to resolveing your problems, and also liekly an easy fix.

Kinda misleading title I thought you were having an evaporation problem
