Looking for help with my water levels.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Protein skimmer is for saltwater tanks and are pretty useless on freshwater.

I had the same problem with high nitrites and nitrates, but no amonia and ph was fine...

I just added an ac110 to my 46 bow along with the penguin 350 i already had. The AC110 has more bio media and that should help break the nitrites down, but the only way to truly get rid of nitrates is to do more w/c's.

Thanks everyone. I've been changing the water weekly and that seems to be helping a lot. I have a protein skimmer and thought it wouldn't hurt the tank to try, but decided not to. I have a crazy work schedule and was only changing the water every two weeks. The fish look happier.

the weekly water changes will definitely help, also another thing that maybe worth checking is the readings straight from your tap...

Some people here have said they have high nitrates straight out of their taps...

I was thinking the poor quality tap water probably has a lot to do with it. I thought about putting in a filtration system. Nothing too crazy but I rent and it would have to be something that can be easily removed. I'll keep searching the diy forums to see what I find.
