I'm looking to set up my 42x18x18 snapping turtle tank and have it look as natural as possible, wood, rocks, sand pebbles, live plants
can you post pics of your setup?

How big is your snapper? Snappers, except small juveniles, are destroyers of tankscaping. If you put in wood and rocks, make sure they are massive and/or bolted down; otherwise the snapper will move them, possibly cracking the glass or injuring himself if he tips a big rock over. Also, protect anything he could possibly bite through- tubing, prefilters, heaters. Sand or gravel will be scattered, and possibly ingested.

Plants will be shredded. If you must have plants, use fast-growing stem or floating plants. I have a mass of Wolffia in my main snapper tank; I think it makes him feel more secure, and he can eat it if he gets hungry enough.

Noto pretty much nailed it, don't put anything in your tank you don't want chewed on. I have a few large rocks, a couple plastic pots for cover, and a tree stump in my tank. I just let my turtle do the decorating.

If you plan to run heaters or internal filters in your tank I would suggest using plastic tubing over your power cords so that your turtle can't chew through the cord and shock himself

thanks for the info
my snapper is about 3 1/2 inches and about 10 months old
I have a fluval 405 filter with inline hydor 300watt heater

At that point you can decorate the tank how you want. I tried to provide mine with a basking spot and with a basking light when mine was younger, but he never really took advantage of it. When they get bigger, you have to worry more about room for him to navigate than basking.

I don't know if this will make it, but here's a good snapper site.

The only thing that stood a chance with my snapper was hornwort. I have a 15lb rock in there for him to get closer to the surface if needed and he pushes it around at will. With these guys you dont decorate, they do. I wouldnt bolt nothing down, if they want they WILL move it when they get bigger.
