I keep mostly true monsters and odd balls. My son has a 55 full of a variety of tiger barbs, dojo loaches and pictus cat. Any ideas for a fun, active, visible odd ball? Looking for mid to upper level and will not out grow the tank. Thank you
I have a picture in my head of your 55. Dojo loaches and pictus on the bottom out of the way, and your tiger barbs here, there and everywhere? I suspect that the majority of the time the tiger barbs leave the bottom dwellers alone simply because of their position within the tank?
Is there a chance that any "mid to upper level" fish you get are going get fin picked to an inch of their lives by your tiger barbs? They will be right in the line of fire if they occupy the same space. Tiger barbs are well known for it, though I believe if they are in huge groups then fin nipping of other fish can be reduced/eliminated.
You also don't state whether it's a small shoal of "oddballs" you're after, or a single show fish?
If it's a group of colourful, active, mid/upper level fish you're after then i'd be tempted to look at the vast array of rainbowfish on offer, though again, as mentioned, your tiger barbs could be a real issue there.
If it's a single fish you want then I'd opt for a cichlid that maybe doesn't get any bigger than 5-6", the guys over in the cichlid sub section could put you in the right direction on that one. And just maybe your tiger barbs would leave a fish such as a no nonsense cichlid well alone!
