Guys I noticed this growth on Big Red last night. However I checked recent pics I took of him a week ag,o and can now see it was there then as well just smaller, so I did not notice it! I have kept fish for 20 years and can say this is a 1st for me.
I did the diligence and checked everywhere on the web I could trying to find answers. I did find a couple pics looking to be the same thing but only on Betta fish, and not one person had a definitive answer as to what it was or how to treat.
Now before we spend a lot of time here- I really do not believe it to be a tumor.
I know the pics do not show you too well but if you look at it up close. It is sort of white/ transparent with some blackness on the inside, which seems to jiggle a bit when he moves. At first I though perhaps a worm of some type inside, but now just think it's some type of puss or jellaton like crap inside.

Big Red may not be my best fish but he is my favorite, he's my homie and I want to help this dude if possible. So please if anyone can help identify this would be very much a help to me.
He does not act sick at all, very active, eating fine. I check water and it's good just did water change a day ago.

My plan for treatment- ton of salt (which I add routinely when doing water changes) going to try a antibiotic 1st with salt. If this does not work I will shift to a internal parasite med, if this fails I will try minor surgery; making small incision on bump with razor for an attempt to drain fluids, and treat with salt once more. This is last resort before I risk losing him-I know that may sound a bit brutal to some but it may become unnecessary (and yes I know the risk there)- not sure maybe you guys can help?

I have never seen anything like it. Imwould not panic, considering he has had it since ever.

If it was mine, i would give it a couple of weeks and monitor its growth and the fihe 's behaviour and continue my schedule.

I do not think it is internal parasite related.

If i were to do something, my firts attempt would, on the opposite, to try and physically remove or drain that growth and then reinforce salt and lower temps to try to avoid secondary bacterial infections.

Well not forever just about two weeks it's been there. So you think jump straight to attempting to drain then treat it. I have also thought about this my only thing is how much shock could it bring him. I doubt too much but you never know. I will very much consider it though thanks you for your input bro!

Hoping someone has seen it before though as I sure have not only in the betta pics I found

I had this happen once with a big FH like this. Turns out it was a pocket that food got trapped in. I'd have to catch him and remove it when it got big like your guys is. It never bothered him and he had it until he died. I'd say try removing it, see what the material is like and watch got it to come back. Good luck with your big guy, hopefully its not anything more serious.

Sorry. I misread. Thought you had not noticed it, kind if allways.

I still would try to see what its is, with my fingers, before going the medication way. Might me something that you feel is easy to remove or empty.

Examine the fihs on a wet towel and have help at hand should it jump away.

Possibly a hyperplastic thyroid? That looks like where the thyroid is and the coloration looks grayish (not sure as I am color blind.) It it's grayish raspberry that would be a clue.

My eyes are not what they used to be, but the growth seems to be in the gill cover. Not in the " throat" region.

I'm only brain storming. I've never done any dissection on fish.

It could certainly be an abscess or neoplasm. On the other hand, if it's the thyroid, iodine deficiency could be the culprit as well as a slew of toxic chemicals. (If other fish were not affected, that would kike rule out toxins.) On the other hand, some fish simply do develop goiter as they age.

Dispatch is the only poster who recognizes this thing + had a successful experience, so I would try to pursue more detailed directions from her first. you might get lucky and totally be rid of it.

Thanks man this is a damn good educated guess in my opinion, but because it is isolated like you said I am not thinking it's the thyroid.

Dispatch, I can see this happening they are very messy eaters. Hard for me to accept it may be food though although I am very much hoping your correct!

As far as coloration it's very weird. I wish I could get a good pic of it for you guys but it's hard just to focus with the human eye on what your looking at because it's not perfectly transparent. I see some darker grey or black inside it and also some (two at least) orange toned spots or something inside.

I have decided to operate and find out. Will take pics and video of it during the process and will share the result with you guys. I figure waiting may only worsen it, and as Miguel stated (my feelings as well) treatment after it's been opened might be more effective. Of course this could go very badly as well and I could end up shocking the fish causing death. I hope that be it not the case, but a risk I think I will take..
