My female Is 16"+ and heavy bodied , the male is quite a bit leaner and 14" ish. The pair have been together 4+ years now.

They are 100% peaceful except for the odd scrap during the males early spring breeding attempts and/or over defending fry later in the summer when they start to leave the fathers protection and explore the tank . But the extra space in the 6' tank didn't change that at all. Unfortunately the odd fight over breeding /defending fry is just part of the process with channa .

i only have a group of ornatipinnis, 5 in total and at 7" they do ok in a 4x 18x 20 when i had them in a larger tank they seem to change behaviour, freak out , go dark in colour and stayed hidden a lot more. i then put them in a shorter tank and they back out again. also when i moved i packed the tank out more with bigger DW and more plants etc dropped the water level a bit too now i can fluctuate it from 10" to 20" for seasonal changes. the group always has something going on to watch, aggression is part and parcel but as yet nothing major has happened just a bit of bickering over dominance on the initial move.

don't pass up the small guys. same attitude, amazing colours and can work a group in them tanks.

Cheers guys,

Just looking into where and how much a can get a channa marulioides from.

Getting hold of fish in the uk can be a pain in the ass

Emperours probably won't be too hard to find ,I find the tropicals tend to be less seasonal then the others . but you may need to ask for a special order due to there potential large size.

Are you going after one of the more regular looking marluloides or the "blue emperour" (locality from Sumatra)

What ever i can find to be honest

but blue emperour sounds good

two best option i would say outside of LFS for SH in UK:

ebay, normally has a good selection on there but buying blind.

best option, have a chat with aquaman45 aquaman45 (richard) from wharf aquatics they normally have a good selection and alway look after us guys, well worth the travel. also check out there online list it's normally upto day.

Yes , diplo's aka "Indian giant snakehead" get very large. They are they are very similar in both size and appearance to channa micropletes , so much so that at one point they were considered a locality of giant snakehead that somehow established itself in india.

If you are searching for the maruloides, the marulius or the pseudomarulius are also good options as they are similar in size and characteristics
