Looking for new substrate ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow, looks pretty darn good!

i got to looking around and all my tanks have pretty much the same gravel...

i was reading detritis gets stuck under tile so that stopped that idea.... i suppose i could take one of those backgrounds and silicone it to the bottom....

got the standard rocks (carib sea gemstone 50# for $22) coming i’ll have to get creative later...

Unfortunately same thing will happen with a background on the bottom

I use a lot of Black Diamond blasting sand and love it. However I had the same issue with my male cuban going dark so I picked up some lapis luster sand from home depot and redid this tank with a mix to lighten it up but not be just plain sand color. It's just about as cheap and is a nice natural beach sand color. We will see how it works. If it does I'm gonna do that same for my haitiensis as he stays dark as well. Before and after pics.

Tried to get a better shot of the sand this morning now that the tank is cleared up but all the sun coming in was making the reflection terrible. I think this shows the color a little better. The Male has lightened a bit already.

love those plants! nitrates must be very low!

Yes sir! I run the same thing in my 20 gallon planted guppy tank. It's nearly a zero maintenance tank. The golden pothos in that tank is climbing pins in the wall and nearly overtaking my wife's pictures and decorations on the entire wall lol. Nitrates in that tank are a constant zero. I only do a 25% water change occasionally to replace minerals for the livebearers, and top the tank off because the plants do "drink" a suprising amount of water over the course of weeks.

20 gallon livebearer tank. Hard to get perspective but some of those leaves are bigger than my hand and I'm a pretty big dude lol.
