Im looking into getting a lungfish but im having a hard time deciding which kind so im looking for opinions from people who have them..Im leaning toward the MAL(anyone know where i could get one?) and i really like the look of the WAL. Does anyone have a gilled african? Eventually id like to have an AUL when i have the space and money. Also could somone give me a price range? I know what the AUL usually run but im not sure about the rest of them.
Thanks

If an AUL's price is making you hesitate, forget about getting a gilled lungfish (Protopterus amphibius). Mine cost me much more than my AULs and keeping this sensitive species alive for 2 years was a constant battle against one illness or another.

If you're looking for a lf to place in a comm setup, your choices are an AUL or a S. Am. LF (Lepidosiren paradoxa). All the african lungs are too aggressive to trust in a comm setup.

Wow Oddball, I would never have thought a lung would be difficult to keep. I have two South American Lungs, both in community setups. Both have never caused a problem. Now my WAL and MAL are both aggressive, destructive monsters who can't be trusted with fish (or fingers, ornatments, heaters, filters, etc).

Thanks guys..So if i were to decide on a MAL or WAL does anyone know where i could get one? also wondering if a 125 would be big enough for a while with a SAL?

If it's a long (6 foot) 125, it's plenty big enough. SALs are thin and flexible compared to other lungs. Mine's 3 feet or a bit over. On another thread someone was saying it's too small for a 3 footer, so I through him in my 125 and took some pics lol.

yeah, i think AUL are best or SAL... I can't get my hands on one though.

Here's a list of what my lungs feed on:

Earthworms, crayfish, minnows, ghost shrimp, ramshorn snails, sinking sticks/wafers/pellets, raw shrimp, fish fillets, clam meat, mussel meat, beef heart, etc. They'll basically feed on anything. I've never kept a lung that is/was a fussy eater.
