Ok so i got my SAL this morning..yay!..everything looked good after i got him all settled in..he was swimming around checkin stuff out, but now its just wanting to stay up at the top of the tank..just floating there and i keep thinkin its dead..is that normal?? and i know it sounds stupid but its mouth seems so tiny im not sure what i should give it..im afraid im goin to kill it..

Young SALs tend to stay near the surface since they're closer to the air. However, don't discount the notion that there may be something wrong with the tank. Is this a new setup? If not, how often are the gravel washes/water changes? And, how much for each cleaning? What's the temp of the tank?
The LFs mouth may look small but, don't get comfortable when working near its mouth. Their jaws expand wider than you think. And, their jaw strength is immense. Their dental plates can sever a finger so quickly that some victims of LF bites have reported that they didn't realize they'd lost part of their finger until seeing the lost digit.

thanks..the tanks been set up for at least 2yrs or so..i do 40ish% WC every other week and the temp hovers around 78..i did get it to eat last nite..some bloodworms, a few pellets and an earthworm..when i was looking at it ealier today i noticed what looks like a white spot of something on its side near its right rear fin..im thinkin that might be something bad..if it is what do you treat them with? same stuff as other fish?

Probably a slight fungal infection from having its slime scraped from netting out of the lfs. These are scaleless fish that respond well to increased temp treatment, the addition of salt and treating with Maroxy. This med is safe enough to use on eggs so, I usually employ this med on my LFs, clown loaches, etc.
Treat for several days after the spot(s) disappear since the visible infection is merely the fruiting body of the fungus. Its spores still exist in the gravel and under the LFs skin. Good luck.
