I have a newly established 47G tall/column tank. PLants are in, substrate Seachem red, compressed CO2 with reactor/powerhead. I have a coralife PC (96w) . I dont really like the look of it, and am looking for a pendant. I was recommended VHO lights. I've looked allover, but being that the tank is 21" wide, it's kind of hard to find one that small. MH might not be the best, plus at 60-75 a pop, will get pricey. Plus the pendant might be very hot for the location. I don't mind spending the cash for something good, and good looking, so can I get a tips where to look? being the the plants do have quite a few red plants, I also want the 10K and 67K.

Thanks ahead of time.

one MH lamp would be more then enough for a tank that size and with the right reflector should cover the entire tank. but if not two MHs can be cheaper then some T5 HO. also when recomended VHO you need to be carfule because VHO that most reefers talk about are t12... and t5ho are more effecient then traditional VHO. you can also create T5 VHO but it requires some DIY ballast work.

im not sure on the length of a tank like this but there are alot of options you could do two 2bulb fixtures and just put one near the front of the tank and one near the back. or you could do a single 2 or 4 bulb fixture and just plant everything in the middle. all depends on money. there are some good MHs ill look for the link and try and post them at a later time.

what is the actual size of the tank. if its deeper then 15" i would use T-5HO or MH (im guessing the tank is deeper then 15" because its a tall) T-5HO is becoming the new "norm" with high tech planted tanks. the bulbs last longer, run cooler and put out way more light then traditional bulbs. the great thing about T-5HO is you can get them in any Kelvin you could possible want.

i dont know much about the lights you linked so i cant help there.

Thanks for the guidance. I look forward to advice and getting the best fixure for this tsnk. Does anyone know about these lights:
High Output SHO and Standard compact Fluorescent (CFL) aquarium light bulbs;
These aquarium lights fit in ANY incandescent fixture; http://americanaquariumproducts.com/PowerCompact.html. I hope to have something selected by this weekend and make a purchase by Monday

The SHO light is not as well known in many aquarium hobbyist circles (which is unfortunate), but is well known in green house use as they have been found second to none for plant growth, due to high output in the important PAR light energy.

I would recommend reading this article as well:
