As the title states, I'm wondering if anyone could make a recommendation for a 1" PVC gate valve for my sump. I've been irresponsibly relying on a ball valve for the last almost 2 years now and would really like to get this off my very belated to do list.

I've seen a few on obscure sites here and there but many look to be cheaply made and if I can get someone with personal experience vouching for one it would help make the decision a lot easier. Also, would a metal gate valve be acceptable? I was curious if it could in any way eventually cause harm to the system.

Thanks in advance.

Everyone likes the Spear, but they are costly. I paid over $60 for the 1.5" valve.

Metal is just a long term corrosion problem. PVC, ABS, or polypropylene is all I use. Plexiglas and lexan for lids.

Polypropylene cannot be glued, so applications are limited.

Thank you both for the suggestions.

Ulu Ulu in your experience would you say the Spears are worth the cost?

It's not that the Spears are worth the cost. It's that the other ones aren't worth owning.

The spears is a rebuildable valve which means it should last a lifetime. The construction is heavy duty.

If you can't remove the globe and repack the stem, you have a disposable valve. A cheap irrigation valve designed to be outdoors with cold water only.

Don't misunderstand me. A cheap valve in the sump can be fine if it drips. I have plumbing in sumps I couldn't use in the house.

Risk tolerance varies as well.
