Is $70 to much to ask?

Seems too much for me, you could mark the price down later saying he's on sale. He is by the way a different variation of the normal sailfin. Here, in this area they are called marbled sailfin. Their brick-like pattern is smaller then a normal sailfin and their dorsal fin is rounded whereas the normal sailfin is pointed. This however make no difference in price.

Even though a sailfin is a step up from a common. Once they reach 10inches or more, their valve levels off to match a common as they become harder for people to house.

I would think they should NEVER be priced more then $20

I would guess about $20 for the Bala Shark

i got mine for 6.99 @petsmart

From a busniess point of view, you need to move him out. Right now he's taking up a whole tank, and thats costing you money. If he was gone and you stocked the tank with new fish, and sell 10 of them in the next month, and make $5 on each one, thats $50 of profit.

If that big lard-ass pleco is still sitting in there with a high price tag you are out of pocket, and would have been better to just give him away free with the purchase of a jar of algae tabs.

By all means put $70 on him, if you think thats what the local market will bear, but if you dont get any interest, or someone likes him but baulks at the price, cut the price and move him out.

Ian

P.S. I seem to get given plecos all the time as friends and family know I have big tanks, so I have one just like that. As I can get them free, or buy a small one for $10 and wait, I'm not going to pay $70 for one. But I also understand that as a business a shop has to make something when they re-home big fish like that.

True, I like having a good selection of 6+ pleco's in stock, and having the 14+ inch pleco, is just a big draw when kids look in my show tank.... But for some reason people around here love big Oscars, Me personally i don't really like Oscars because it always seems like i am losing a whole tank to just one fish.... As for the large 6+ inch Bala Shark, a local pet store is buying him for $15 on Sunday.... He's going in there 125gal show tank.... thanks for all you advice

An LFS here is selling a leopard sailfin (like the one you have) that is around 12"-14" for $200. Kinda ridiculous to me... They probably think the bigger the better. Also, they label it as "Humpback Butterfly Pleco" cuz, well, it has a humpback... I think that came from being cramped into an undersized tank.

You do know that L113 / 234 (Megalancistrus parananus) looks similar to sailfin pleco right??? Looks like humpback too!

;)

easily goes for $200+

No problem if you have a big "Show" tank with some cool big fish in there. Thats more like an advertising or publicity write off, if it gets folks in the door and grabs their attention then it's a valid expense.

My big tank has just my Oscar and big Sailfin pleco, that gets guests attention more than any number of tiny fish. ;)

From a business point of view, the more people you can get hooked on monster fish, the more gear you are going to sell. And having the big fish there gives them fair warning of what they are buying. "Will it live in a 10gal?". Just turn around and point at the 12" fish in the big show tank. "Nope, you will need 75gal and one of these here power filters, which happen to be on special" :D

If they cant afford that, then take them down to the betta and guppies :grinno:
