Looking for something plant friendly.

My angelfish, jurupari earth eater, and regani dwarf pike cichlid are all good to my plants, my EBA would used to sometimes go and tug on a plant, but only when he had a buddy.

I’ve kept Rotkiel, Liberifer, and Severus and none have eaten plants. They only molest plants when they are in the way of their chosen territory or breeding spot. Same with Hoplarchus.

Only large cichlids I would consider plant safe in the sense that they don’t uproot or molest them (let alone eat them) are Crenicichla species. They will only uproot them if they are digging a cave.

This is a bit of a catch 22 because larger growing cichlids that don't eat plants are generally predators so will eat your community fish.

If it's your goal to have a nice planted tank, I wouldn't take a chance with sevs, pearsei, vieja, etc.

If you never feed your predatory fish with live food, they will lose their instinct to eat small fish. My large predatory fish are all raised with pellets, and they do not eat small fish. Currently, I have a 10" Frontosa, 7" lepidiolamprologus elongatus, and a 7" Sciaenochromis fryeri predators that co exist peacefully with a school of 1.5" Diamond Tetra and Molly.
