Unfortunately, my trusted lfs employee who was going to help me pick some new fish to breed resigned from his position a few days ago and isn't going to be able to help me decide anymore. Now, left with tons of blank tanks that are fully cycled I need some help picking a new breeding project and Im seeking mfk help!

My signature lists all of my available tanks. Currently, the 55, one of the 35s, the 33, one 30, both 27s, one of the 20s and most of the 5 and under tanks are in use. The fry growing out in the 55 are nearly ready for sale, but the tank will likely be occupied for another 2 months at least. One or two of the 30ish gallons will be free soonish as well but not right away.

Here are the parameters:

- Im moving at the end of April so Id like a species who I could spawn and raise the fry to size in that period, as I dont want to move lots of fish.

- Id like something interesting to look at, and hopefully interesting to observe while feeding, breeding, whatever.

- Id like to do something I wont have an incredibly difficult time selling the spawn of. So far, I've only had bread and butter fish like fancy guppies, swordtails, barbs, Endlers, Convicts, and some bolivian rams (who never spawned anyways) and the fry were always easy to get rid of . I don't need it to be AS easy but Id like to be able to get rid of the babies before I move.

- It doesnt have to be one species only as there are a number of free tanks.

- Id prefer fish without very specific or difficult to meet dietary requirements.

- African cichlids would be fun since I've never done those

- They musn't outgrow whatever tank they get put into, so no oscars :p. I don't want to have to upgrade a tank for the fish.

Eager to hear your suggestions!

tropheus.

i have just started my journy into Afrcan breeding with my tropheus duboisi. Your large number of empty tanks would be put to use for tanks for holding females, dropped fry, and for females recovering after dropping!

I have 12 in my 55, but females are too young to start breeding but that wont stop the older dominant male from trying:D

if you are interested in africans and are scared of the idea of tropheus(though u shoulndt their diffuculty is way over played) then a pair of comps or calvins would work. but it would take quite some time for you to grow them to breeding siz if u didnt want to buy older ones

Interesting fish, I don't recall if Ive seen any at the stores before, will be checking on boxxing day though. Would they take over all of my extra tanks or would I have more room for other species? Any other ideas?

if u want any of these i would advise buying from online to get away from high prices. around me tropheus duboisi(cheapest tropheus) will go for around $20. online u can get $8-$10 i got my tropheus duboisi from Reserve Stock Cichlids

as far as getting others in the tank for tropheus other tank mates of other species wont be bothered but if u get a larger colony like advised other tank mates will probably be overstocking in a 55! with a large colony all u need is the one colony to entertain for hours they are so fun to watch! but do your research on them, a lot of research was done for me to be reassured that i wouldnt kill my tropheus cichlid-forum's library really helped me with my research. http://cichlidforum.com/articles/tropheus_corner.php
trophs.com helped too

if u have any questions about the tropheus i can give you my experiences as a noob with troph.

with the other comps and calvin only one pair would be able to fit in a 55. but other shell dweller would be able to be housed along with them.

If you want fast stay away from the tanganican cichlids. Some take months or years to get to breeding/selling size like comps or calvus or shellies
saulosi or demasoni stay smaller and are usually in demand if you want to try africans.yellow labs are usually easy to move too.

Yellow labs were something the lfs manager mentioned. I don't personally like them, roomie does though so they're a good possibility. I dont think they'd require very many tanks unless I did a lot of them though correct?

Something else the lfs guy mentioned that I can't remember the name of was an african cichlid by the name of _________ Regatus or Regalus or something along those lines.. was sort of tube shaped with horizontal stripes.. very nice but apparently harder to find. He showed it to me in one of the books they sold. Any idea what Im referring to? Was a smaller fish, or at least appeared to be.

the tropheus wont need too many tanks for u to breed them just time. The main colony would need your 55. And the females that start to hold will need to be removed to a different tank to rop their fry, then move the female into a recovering tank for them to build up strength from the beatings they may have gone through from the mael then the female will go back with the main colony

this is true tang's do tank a lil while to see results frok their breeding. And if u want wild stock will really put a dent in ur wallet!

psuedotropheus stay smaller and should start breeding quicker. so check out some of the different psuedotropheus species like the demasoni, saulosi ect,
(even though pseudo means false they do not really resemble a tropheus)
