I know the tank is too small for him. Definitely need a bigger tank. I would like to put him in my 4 feet community tank, but I'm affraid that he cannot compete with other fish during feeding and he might bite the slow moving fish.

Hi

My FRT lives with a pair of ornate birchers. Theres plenty of places they can get to where the turtle can't but I've never seen her try and get them. Definately stay away from the plecs, for the reasons you've given. It depends on space really. They seem to get on with other fish and each other given enough room (and no mating fighting). Your tank is sounding small for the turtle never mind extras so I'd perhaps wait till there is more room for the turtle and then whoever you choose to put in with him has more freedom (escape room) too.

Last thought would be to choose a fish that can easily be moved into, and fit in with inhabitants of, another tank if they don't get on.

I'm assuming you have another tank - don't all monster fish keepers have more than one? :)

Thank you for your comments.

I have 5 more tanks and they are fully occupied.

My FRT lives with a bunch of fish....and apart from the occasional random bite, he's pretty well behaved...

Hi tudiapaktam.:welcome:

Congratulations on your new Fly River Turtle!

I have 2 FRTs and they both live with fish in their respective tanks.

I just posted pictures on 1-2-08 in this forum of my tanks if you wish to see them.

I am no expert. I am learning every day on how to take care of my FRTs

I love my turtles, including a normal feeding schedule, I also spend at least 1x a week draining, cleaning & filling their tanks.

Please read Oddball's sticky on FRT's. He has awesome information on Fly River Turtles.

Very important!- Do not keep FRTs in the same tank- only 1 turtle to a tank.

FRTs will fight till one turtle dies.

As far as keeping fish with FRTs, I believe it is a good thing. My FRT definitely reacts to fish in their tanks. It is great stimulation for the FRTs.

As far as eating the fish, I have not seen my FRT hunt down fish & eat them. I do believe if there were a dead fish in the tank, they would definitely chow down on the carcass. I would also not be surprised if they were hungry they would try to catch one of the smaller fish and try to eat it. ....Mine FRTs are well fed.... hence the 1x a week cleaning schedule.:hitting:

In one tank, one frt lives with a pleco who cleans the top of his shell.
My turtle doesn't seem to mind and the shell looks great.

The other tank the giraffe catfish are constantly pushing on one FRT and he does not bite on the 2 catfish at all.

Fly River Turtles are very special turtles, and have special requirements that must be addressed or they will die an early death.

I am sorry to put it so boldly, but it is so important for you understand that this list is mandatory.

1 Big tank.
2 Clean filtered water in tank.
3 Warm and 82 - 86° F (27.7-30° C) water temp.
4 Good high quality plant based foods.

If you have any questions please pm me.

Good luck with your Fly River. Please take good care of him.:)
