Looking to add 1 or 2 more, but what?

pleco n cichlids are not good company for bichirs ... but u can try

a delhz would be perfect addition :)

Every scenario is different. I've kept Cichlids, Plecos, and Bichirs together for years and it has never been an issue. And I believe that the "lazier" Bichirs such as Lower Jaw species like Endlis and Laps will probably have issues with Plecos. I have had Delz, Polli, Sen, and Ornate (all Upper Jaw species) with my Plecos and there has never been an issue. I currently have 2 Sens and 2 Pollis with 3 Plecos. As far as Cichlids, I've only had a GT and Salvini with the mix along with some Dats. The only time any issue arose was when the Salvini started to spawn. Other than that...nothing.

Delhezi, Polli, and more Sens would work well. All those species grow to the size that you're looking for. But if you experience any aggression from the Plecos or Cichlids, it's best to try to rearrange the decor first. If that doesn't work, you're probably going to have to move some fish.

I would remove the Texas, GT and the plecos before considering adding more bichirs. Those have been known to bully/suck on bichirs

So far so good! I haven't seen hardly any aggression toward my bichir from the cichlids. They might nudge him a bit as they're feeding but other than that no serious threats. The only issue I may see is my texas is trying to hook up with this female texas hybrid. Lately she's not interested. If they to breed, that will just cause drama for everyone.

Could you explain the lower and upper jaw thing? I think i get it, but just to know for sure. Sounds like an under bite, over bite issue a bit. I think, in my OCD, I would like to have all upper bite, upper jaws.

Thanks for the help. I will look into these and see what I can find.

Well benzjamin, the ones you recommended all look cool! What I saw of the polli it had a lot of really cool green in it. Almost was neon to a point in one pic I saw. Based on my quick search I would probably go with a delz, and a polli. I like the look of the ornate a lot too but another website said they can reach 24". Is this accurate? Definitely would be an issue in my 18" wide tank. I don't think I would want a fish that big anyway. How fast do most of these bichir grow? Or on average, how long would it take one to hit 12"????

Thanks again!

Here's a sticky that will help explain. Post #2 gives you a list of what is considered Lower Jaw and Upper Jaw.;)

This sticky was great! Thanks again! I will definitely revisit that later. Even though this is my first bichir, I can see how people get addicted to these fish. This might turn into a life long love of bichirs. I can see myself keeping a couple of these with my cichlid tanks as long as I'm in the hobby.

Glad to hear you're doing your research:thumbsup: While there have been Ornates that have reached 20"+, it's a rare sight to see. However, they do average around 16"-18" in captivity. They can be one of the more aggressive Bichirs that you would encounter, so be aware when choosing tank mates.

They all can vary when it comes to growth. I have had 2 Pollis for about 7 months now and they have grown about 3" and are now 7", but I know there are people here with much greater results.

I have 4 Delz of various lengths and the oldest one I have is now the smallest at 7" after 2 years while I have one that's a year old at 10" and the newest one that I got at 3" and is now 8" and that one I got less than a year ago.

You can check most of my Polys here;)
