Looking to buy my first canister filter...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the Rena XP4 on my 55 right now. Even with my dirty fish, the water is crystal clear. I would have gotten the XP3 though except that I am looking to step up to a 120+ gal tank and prefer to over filter everything.

Rena Filtstar XP series gets my vote.

whatever filter you get, make sure you cn get replacement parts for it. years of non-stop 24 hours a day, 365 days/year work will take a toll on the machine. i believe rena has parts available and so does fluval. eheim parts can be had as well. i don't know about odyssea though or other brands, like cascade. i'd stay away from marineland canisters, except the magnums.

They're all ok. I have a rena xp3, it's good. I also have a penn-plax cascade 1000, and it's just fine too. Only one I'd avoid would be marineland, because I've heard bad things about them leaking. And bad things about their heaters getting stuck on. And bad things about their heaters exploding and breaking tanks open. And bad things about their all-in-one filter top things overflowing and leaking. Just stay away from marineland, in general.

If I were to buy one for a 55, I'd get one similar in size to the rena xp3. The rena ones have a really well-done quick disconnect.

If you get a canister filter, make sure you get one of those hydor inline heaters to go with it! No heater in the tank is pretty awesome.

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone!

It looks like most people so far prefer the Rena over the others. In my reading the only ones that I have heard are difficult to get parts for were the Eheim and Marineland ones. I have also heard that the customer service for both companies leaves a lot to be desired. I am sure everyone's mileage with both of them varies, but those are just some of the things I have heard from people.

If I went with the Rena XP3, can someone recommend a good online retailer to get it from?
