I'm looking to buy an eel, I currently have a 40 long that I'm in the process of repairing and I've always wanted an eel....

Currently I am looking these two guys....

http://segrestfarms.com/index.cfm?f...9588&EEL-BLACK-SPOT-REG&Mastacemblus-sp..html

The problem is that I can't find that much information on these guys, especially the first one, because I prefer something that is freshwater, not brackish. Also, I'm looking to have a small community with him/her as the centerpiece...

Now if it comes to it, and they are brackish, I'd probably get two of them and have a species only....

Any help would be appreciated

those are types of spiny eels. there not real eels but make sure you have a good lid on your tank. I had a peacock and he jumped out the first day I had him and the otherone I got I had to take back since he was trying to find away out of the tank as well. my best guess is start off with one thats small so he will be sell likly to jump, and I wouldnt do brackish water with them they fo fine in fresh. they eat small worms like black worms and blood worms. put alot of gravil in the tank since they like to dig in to it to hide. and I would say temps around 75ds

But look up spiny eels youll find more info

Do you by chance know the name of the first one?
I'm using sand as a substrate, play sand to be specific, so that should be fine.
For the lid, I was thinking some plexiglass and a section of mesh so my HOB can still let the water through and keep the eel in.

Idk the commen name since theres so many types of spiny eels. I know a few that are simaler to them like the tier track eel and zig zag eel. there are lots more. just dont look ate fire eels, fier eels get about 4 ft and have spikes on there tail that can split your arm open. the eels your looking for get about a foot or so but say small.

playsand gets hard and clumpy over time. pool filtration sand is a good sand to use alomng with 3mm and 4mm ( these wont harden over time and are larger grane so it wont go everywere when fish are swimming around quickly but if its already in the tank idk that youll wanna change it but owell. hah

make sure with the lid theres some wait on it. my 6 to 7 inch peacock eel exploaded the lid open with a large bang. so needless to say I didnt go with those crappy stock plastice ones any more and started using glass.

2days ago I saw a few sellers of spiny eels on here and on PFK

First one is probably afromastacembelus frenatus.
Second one is probably mastacembelus dayi.
I say probably because with spiny eels you never know for sure ;)

Since they are spiney eels they are freshwater, correct?

Can't do much about the sand, was thinking about mixing in some silica sand with the play sand.

What kind of tank mates? I have some tiger barbs and a rainbow shark that I want to move if possible. I'm looking at cichlids or bala sharks if I can't move the ones I have.

What about this guy?

if u want a eel do a zig zag eel.. no cichilds

there peacful fish so nothing that will try to eat them and or pick on them or youll never see them out and they will hide all the time. I think there nocturnal but if you have lights on the dimmerside like leds you might see them more in the day time.

Zig zag eel is spiney isn't it? My pH is too high for it, mine usually sit above 7.2

Rainbow shark should be peaceful enough and large enough not to be eaten

PH is almost entirely irrelevant. Focus on hardness. And stable beats perfect. Almost every fish in the trade will be comfortable at a pH of 7.2, assuming it indicates moderate carbonate hardness. So go for it.
