Hey guys i am deciding to get a monitor lizard to put in my basement. I just don't know the proper housing for it. I prefer a reptile tank that is very tall example 2 and 2 length and width and 4 tall. what kind of moniter can live in that kind of tall terrium. a tree moniter?? looking for a specific specises. tell me the scientific name or something. what is the minimum tank size?? My lizard budget is around 150 dollars! thanks

Your not getting any kind of tree monitor, not with that tank or that budget. All tree monitor species are on the expensive side and the value of the monitor alone wont be far from the price of putting together a suitable setup. Also remenbar tree monitors are on the demanding side, they need carefull reserch of their needs from reliable sources in order to remain healty. They are very unforgiving of less then optimal care when compared to other reptiles and their body condition drops fast. A easier species to have would be one of the dwarf monitors such as ackies Varanus acanthurus. But even they need their pre-purchase research.

For the most part, small monitors and a small initial cost do not go together; large monitors seem to be pretty cheap as babies but have way higher costs in the long run, especially food and housing.

You're really only going to be able to keep an ackie monitor in there, and the cage would have to be a minimum of 4' x 2' x 2' (LxWxH) rather than 2' x 2' x 4' (LxWxH). However, ackies are not very cheap and definitely are beyond your budget.

How much is a ackie?? seen it in the expo but never asked. So a 4 times 2 times 2 tank is good???
a link to a good monitor car site?? need detail to species.

whats the most afford able small monitor under 2 .5 feet??? no sahvannas or anything.

Monitors aren't really "affordable"
Even small monitors eat a lot, you will need to build your own enclosure as most commercially built enclosures are not made for monitors.

I would recommend joining varanus.nl and varanus.net and doing research.
You need to figure out on your own which species to keep.

Like I said before, "affordable" and "small monitor" do not go together.

Most monitors aren't really beginner-friendly reptiles, but there are a few that a beginner could handle if the keeper properly researches and prepares for them.

Based on Internet prices, a small juvenile ackie will probably run you at least $250; I've never found them for sale at a reptile expo, though, so the price could go either way depending on the availability in your area.

I guess i could put an ackie in there...Nut,ackies or varanus acanthurus range from 250$ to 300$,i tied to build a enclosure under budget & still cost me almost 400$,glass,tile,substrate,lightig,etc,etc...As said the larger species are cheaper but not in the long hall.Mke sure you give them at least a foot of substrate...Good care sheets repticzone or varanus.net..I hope i could help!
