Looking to setup a 500+ gallon freshwater sump tank

Why would you not use baffles or compartments?

Baffles and compartments give your sump that neat and tidy look and they help to channel the flow of water. But a lot of people just have one open space in their sumps. Water in from display tank at one end into a filter sock for mechanical. Big pile of rocks, rings, whatever, in the middle for bio. And pump at the other end. You're still getting the flow of water through your sump.

My current sumps are just the standard 3 compartment type. But any future sumps I run I will probably go with the more basic open plan design. It's purely up to each individual.

Take a look at that build. Its similar to your sized tank. My sump is basically a carbon copy with some minor differences.

You'll notice some differences but allot of similarities between these set ups. Like esoxlusius said allot of this is preference. You can use baffles if you like or not, one gate valve or two (ragin cajun and i tee'd both siphon drains into one)

Have fun with it. Nothing you decide is permanent thats the beauty of sumps. I would post my build but its a long drawn out thread with endless babble lol

That makes sense. I like simple. I think the open design would make it easier to place things like heaters for example.

Make a bigger canister out of a pump and a trash can.

How would that be advantageous to a sump? I don't think trash cans are built to handle the pressure of a sealed DIY canister. I recommend sourcing a used aquarium and positioning that under the display tank.
