If I go with the cons, I'll just set up a holding tank at the house and let the oscar eat what he wants.

How long do you think a jd and a firemouth or convict would live peaceably.

I think its possible for a jack dempsey, firemouth, and convict to live peacefully forever in a 55gallon as long as its kept up on and nobody decides to cross breed. Just get everybody at a small size and have your wife keep a eye on them.

she teaches 3rd grade.

You should have read some of the stories these kids wrote about the oscar (they voted in class to name him "golden eye")

I'm leaning towards convicts, but the wife really wants a JD.

How many convicts do you think could dwell together as long as no one started mating?

The problem with convicts is they're going to mate if there are more than 1 in the tank. You could grab up a few females and a JD and they'd live peacefully for a while.

I teach secondary, so that's why I am focused on behaviors. With third graders, just get them a pet they can name, draw, write stories about... A jack will definately interact with the classroom, much like an oscar. A single jack will live just fine in a 55 with proper care. And if you wife is anything like mine... just get her the jack. That is how I ended up with a ton of oscars:screwy:.

I need a long term suggestion. Because I have no more room at the Inn. My little house won't hold another tank, so I don't need something that will grow out.

I'm thinking 4 convicts till they pair up, and then I'll take the other two back to the lfs (set it up with him before)

Then I'll put a small tank on my desk for the fry, and will have some live snacks for the oscar to chase after

good plan/bad plan

^ She wants a Jack, but she wants a large one, and I think there would be more enjoyment out of watching one grow.
If I thought I could fit a 125gal in my office, I'd get her another oscar and grow it out to bring home in a year or two...but it won't fit in the room.

The jack sould live a very full life in a 55 with proper care. Does she have access to the tank in the summer, or does it have to be torn down and the fish placed else where? Big or small it sould be fun. I agree with you that the kids shoudl watch it grow, but you can split the difference and get a mid sized (4-5 in) jd.

She has some access and doesn't have to tear it down (yet)
They've been pretty good about it, and I could always set it back up on the kitchen table for the summer if need be (she'd be happy about that:ROFL:)

Naw, on the 4-5" jd, I like to see them at like an inch with no real color, and then watch it grow. Be more fun for the kids too.
